Phenology: Painted Ladies

A large number of painted lady butterflies (Cynthia cardui) have arrived in Weston-super-Mare today, probably migrants from Europe or north Africa. There are more than I can remember seeing in recent years and it will be interesting to see how many more arrive over the next few days.

Saw some at Sand Bay too - apparently there are hundred of thousands here. Did you see my small eggars mass cocoon photo taken at Uphill Hill? If not DM me on twitter and will send you a link - it's on my twitpics. Amazing - according to Butterfly Conservation they are now scarce.

I've just seen your picture. My knowledge of butterflies and moths is a bit patchy, but I've certainly never seen anything like that before.

I've seen quite a few unfamiliar butterflies so far this spring, so I'm hoping it's going to be a good year for them. Of course, they're bound to disappear before I get the chance to chase them with a camera.
